A movie in the decade of 90’s that has come on to become a classic in the history of Hindi Cinema. It hit the silver screen in 1995 rocking the entire nation to its tunes ever since!
Running for more than 500 weeks in Maratha Mandir, Mumbai it has earned itself a unique feather in its cap. This very phenomenon can define its success index. The movie gave a new lease of life to Shahrukh Khan, a relative newcomer in the industry besides boosting the share of lady luck to the new kid on the block viz. Kajol. Breaking all records at the box office it created waves amongst the audiences beckoning one and all to "Come fall in Love" with it.
Every time I get down to watch the movie with same zest and zeal my parents are left amazed. It was here that Kajol and Shahrukh redefined the on screen chemistry between actors.
The story is simple. A girl next door called Simran (Kajol) is the daughter of a London based businessman Baldev Singh (Late Amrish Puri), a hardcore conservative Indian at heart. Along with his wife Lajwanti (Farida Jalal) he leaves no stone unturned to impart traditional values to their two daughters Simran and Chutki. The daughters fear their father whereas consider and treat their mother as their best friend, unfolding all their desires to her. It is here that Simran expresses her yearning to travel across Europe with her friends.
The story takes an unexpected turn wherein Simran with due permission from her father sets out to experience the world outside before tying the knot with her stranger husband to be Kuljeet(Parmeet Sethi) in India.
As fate has it, Simran happens to bump into a happy-go-lucky, carefree lad Raj Malhotra (Shahrukh Khan) traveling along with her group. Opposites attract, that is what exactly transpires thereafter. Two people with conflicting personality traits fall in love with each other at the hands of the destiny.
Simran like her usual self confesses to her mother. Unfortunately the conversation is overheard by Baldev who in his indignation decides to return to India immediately and marry her off without further delay. Not finding Simran’s family at home leaves Raj in a fix who is all set to woo the love of his life, onto realization. The road ahead- Go to India to win Simran through the consent of her family. Following the call of his heart and conscience he flies down to Punjab to accomplish the herculean task. His decision is backed by Daddy Dear/ Pops (Anupam Kher).
After going through a roller coaster ride of emotions amongst her family he finally manages to steal Simran from the world. Mission Impossible terminates with the most unforgettable scene from the movie-an injured Raj offering his hand to the drained Simran from the moving train.
The contrasting location of Europe and Punjab, the songs, the plot, the starcast, powerhouse performances- evrything about DDLJ (as it is popularly called) is simply incomparable..... The movie is a complete package of emotions, thrill, action, comedy- U name it and you have it!
My call- A Must Watch. I have seen it over a number of times that I can’t even recollect the figures!!!

Hats off to the King of Evil..:-)
Long live the King!!!
Well folks the King of Evil is dead long since yet his impressions remain. Yes, Amrish Ji popularly known as Mogambo would have been really happy had he lived up to read the praises shelled out by the Gen X of the modern day. Truly a man of class, he fit the bill to the Genre perfectly.
Getting into the skin of the villainous characters he delivered powerhouse performances living up to the expectations of the audiences aptly. He left everyone spellbound, sending chill down the spines and making the likes of Sridevi dance to his tunes.
He came to Mumbai at the age of 40 with a cherished dream to try his luck at acting. However, destiny had something else in store for him.He was rejected owing to his hoarse voice and instead was offered the role of the Bad Man. Eating a humble pie he accepted, unaware that lady luck was to shine bright on him in the near future. His life took a U turn and he came on to become Bollywood’s most loved villain. He also actively contributed in Hollywood, Punjabi, Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu movies. His talent to generate goosebumps earned him endless accolades and prestigious awards.
He did justice to every character that he portrayed. From a caring husband in Aitraaz to an obstinate father in DDLJ to a gracious patron in Pardes, his performance was flawless.
Honestly speaking his loss has created a void in Hindi Cinema and his entralling accomplishments will forever remain embedded deep in the hearts of the HIndi Cinema lovers! :-)

Spreading illusions....
Well folks how many times have you come across situations portrayed in the K Serials conceptualized by the so called Queen of Soap Opera? Am sure none. Her serials convey nothing but a bunch of lies! I have not once though accidentally bumped into my look alike and wonder how the characters of her serials do it so frequently. Probably the copy and paste function is used rampantly. However The catch- When ever they desperately need one. Phew! what amazing coincidence. Am so glad that God does it skillfully on screen and not in real life.
If the statistics are to be believed the Tolerance Index in the modern era has fallen drastically unlike her obedient Bahus who go on to the extent of disguising themselves under oath to investigating to reveal the truth about the Bad Man/Vamps in the show. Truly said "Patience is a virtue" which the Women Brigade like Tulsi,Parvati,Prerna etc imbibe. Though her efforts to produce women oriented serials is commendable yet she should set a limit to over-exaggeration.
At times it really gets difficult to differentiate between the parents and their children as the children look the same age of their parents. Tanya and Bhoomi for instance look like sisters and lolz that is not the case. The need is to pick up actors who at least fit the bill! Most of the times they appear artificial and become laughing stocks. Seems like Ms.Kapoor has invented a new age control mantra, will sure approach her for the same.
Marriage for her is a child’s play. Anurag Basu by this time must have forgotten how many times did he fall in love and marry the lady of his dreams. Huh! If at all she does not believe in the institution of marriage-accepted, but she has no right what so ever to demean it by projecting it as a solution to compromises. It is a sacred phenomenon which should be respected and not be taken for a ride.
Overall her idea of an Indian household is miles away from the harsh realities of life. Not so easily do we trust and permit strangers to invade are heavenly abode. The dead do not wake to life, poor do not become overnight celebrities! Last but not the least folks let us wake up from our fool’s paradise and prevent Ms. Kapoor from spreading such illusions.

Haven for all...
Pune has come a long way in establishing itself on the global front. With a large chunk of population migrating into the peaceful city development rate has picked up speed... Walking down the road we can find commercial construction work pacing up. Over the years numerous shopping malls have come up which sell products ranging across varieties and prices. Disposable income and disposable time are attributed as two prime reasons for the inflow of money into these malls through purchases made by the consumers cutting across all age groups.
Shoppers Stop has two outlets in the city viz. Shivajinagar and Nucleus near M.G.Road. Pune housing IT professionals and a large student populace these malls are thronged by the same. Apart from providing a convenient place to shop for wide range of men and women ware, accessories, shoes, linen, crockery etc they also act as haven to one and all wanting to while away the time. Owing to the magnanimous structures they provides access to easy Window Shopping as well. It is noteworthy that Indian as well as foreign brands are all sold under one roof...
The presence of eating joints within the premises add as a cherry on the cake since hungry shoppers can go and grab a quick bite to pacify their hunger pangs. The Shoppers Stop at nucleus is a little better in a way as popular food chains like KFC and CCD are located on the ground floor!
Various discounts on various items at different times of the year provide an opportunity to impulsive buyers like me and non impulsive buyers alike drop in at the place to cash on the best of the offers available. Although the prices here are high comparatively yet the variety available is irresistible. No wonder it is on the top of people’s minds!

A lone woman's ordeal in an alien society....

This is the breathtaking tale of an American woman named Betty Mahmoody’s escape from a country where she finds herself trapped, the country which is not only hostile to her cause but alien to her culture as well.

They have a daughter called Mahtob and the three are leading a happy family life. Then one fine day at the behest of her husband she agrees to visit his family on a two week vacation to Iran.
Keeping all her apprehensions aside, unaware about the torments awaiting her, she finally lands in the country ruled by Ayatollah Khomeini. She is completely lost to find herself in a culturally different state. She discovers with the passage of time that women have no rights in their male dominated society.
Somehow she and Mahtob compel themselves to enjoy their trip, praying all the while to Jesus for a safe return. Those two weeks seem like eternity to them. In the meanwhile they try their best to mingle with Moody’s family. Visiting relatives and shopping for return gifts keeps them occupied.
But the worse is yet to come. Just as while they are preparing to return to the US, to Betty’s horror, Moody declares his intentions of staying back in Iran forever. All of a sudden she feels cheated and trapped! Her fears begin to turn into reality. Her efforts to persuade Moody to change his decision fall on deaf ears. Now she is left with no option but to comply with her husband turned master’s will who forces her to cut off all ties with her family back in the States.
In the days to come, Betty and Mahtob unearth the animal instincts of the man they both love. Moody suddenly changes from a loving husband and father to a dictator, showing no mercy when his orders are disobeyed. His family members constantly add fuel to fire and Betty finds herself segregated as an outsider within her own family. Their hatred for America begins to take toll on for she is subjected to unnecessary harassment at the slightest given opportunity.

As a result Moody takes Mahtob away from her and treats like a captive. The fear of losing Mahtob makes life all the more difficult for her.

But to her dismay she is cheated yet again and this by her fellow Americans. However, she finds earnest company in a shopkeeper named Hamid and a few others who constantly boost her moral support. Though Betty could have easily left Iran, in fact she let go of two such opportunities to leave the country she didn’t identify herself with. But she was determined to leave and more so with her daughter.
The book is captivating enough to keep the reader hooked to it. Minute details of Iranian lifestyle, society, women rights and above all her sufferings at the hands of her own husband is worth a read.

This game show is unique in more than just one way. On one hand it is a golden opportunity for all the adults to earn rupees five crore by simply answering ten questions. The catch of the show is that it aims at testing waters of not only the kids but their respective parents as well. Moreover, the battle is pitched to test the knowledge of the elderly and the reward is a good five crore rupees.
